Elizabeth's Story

Well here is a capsule of where I've been & what I've done! HAS IT REALLY BEEN NEARLY 50 YEARS? After graduation, I left Gilroy and moved to Pacific Grove where I lived for a year and also enrolled at Monterey Peninsula College. In September 1962 I met and married an Army officer who was taking the Persian language at the Presidio of Monterey. We spent 20 years living and traveling in many parts of the US and the world. We lived overseas in Okinawa and were able to tour part of Asia, spent 2 tours in Iran and from there were able to travel around that country and also spent some time in Lebanon. Spent 6 years in the greater Washington DC area. During those Army years I was able to complete my BA in Spanish at Ripon College in WI with minors in French and History, and later on did my MA in Spanish Literature at George Mason U. in VA. Came back to CA in 1978 after being evacuated from Iran during our second tour there due to the Khomeini riots. Lost everything we owned, had to leave it all there and run, and our marriage ended as well. I stayed on in Salinas with my son and daughter. I was a bilingual teacher in the Migrant Ed program for a few years but I grew tired of the politics involved and decided to move on. In 1987 I remarried and Dick and I moved to Carmel Valley, where we still own our home, we blended families, his daughter is only 6 mos. older than mine, and all worked out very nicely, family-wise. I spent the better part of a decade as an educational test writer and evaluator for CTB/McGraw-Hill in Monterey. Together Dick and I have owned our own dinner theater in Carmel (1983-1987), operated a Bed and Breakfast in Gilroy (1995-2005) in my gr...Expand for more
eat-grandfather's Victorian house on Church St. and one of these days we keep saying we are going to retire but I think we will actually just keep on running till we drop...The family right now is a little scattered. My son, 43, lives in Santa Barbara with his wife and their 3 year old daughter. My daughter,36, lives in CT and has a 4 year old son and my stepdaughter, 37, is a college professor in Chicago. I have been a professional writer for the past 30 years and wrote regular columns and feature articles for a number of newspapers on the Monterey Peninsula and also in Gilroy and Hollister. My topics have always been local history and back roads travel. The fruit of my labors will be on the shelves in December 2009 with my first book, "Carmel Valley," a pictorial history published by the Arcadia Co. as part of its "Images of America" series. I expect to do a narrative history of Gilroy one of these days based on 5 years worth of research and writing a local history column for the Hollister Pinnacle on Gilroy subjects. And I have completed 15 chapters of an 18 chapter biography of my great-grandfather, Gilroy pioneer Heverland R. Chesbro, MD whose home we currently own. These days I divide my time between Gilroy and Carmel Valley. Life is a little too busy but it is better than being bored! Would love to hear from old classmates and hope each of you who reads this has as fond memories of our days at GUHS as I do. We didn't realize how fortunate we were to have had the excellent education we did, nor did we grasp, back then, what a great experience and privilege it was to grow up in a small town where people knew who you were, and cared about you.
